A new champion will emerge in the Extra Battle of the Giants tournament, as the reigning champions Lautoka faced an unexpected defeat, succumbing to Rewa with a staggering score of 6-0. The match saw Lautoka reduced to ten men early on after Kishan Sami received a red card in the 13th minute for a foul on a Rewa player just outside the penalty area.

With Lautoka’s defense already in disarray, John Orobulu quickly capitalized, netting the opening goal shortly thereafter. Rewa’s captain Setareki Hughes showcased his exceptional skill early in the second half, doubling the lead with a powerful shot after a one-on-one opportunity against the Lautoka goalkeeper. Hughes then added another goal to his tally, further extending Rewa’s dominance.

Orobulu scored again, bringing the score to 4-0, before substitutes Josaia Sela and Semi Matalau rounded out the scoring with a fifth and sixth goal, respectively, ensuring Rewa’s emphatic victory.

This defeat marks a stark contrast to Lautoka’s success in prior tournaments. Last year, they progressed to the final of the Battle of the Giants, securing a 5-3 victory over Rewa in the semifinals, where they demonstrated their potential and competitive spirit. Coach Shivam Raj will need to regroup and reassess as his team prepares for future challenges.

Rewa’s performance in the tournament thus far indicates their determination to reclaim the championship title. Their strong showing against Lautoka, built on teamwork and individual brilliance, demonstrates the potential for an exciting tournament ahead. Fans remain hopeful that this victory will set the stage for Rewa to continue their impressive run and possibly reclaim past glory in Fijian football.
