The Rewa Provincial Council has introduced a revised Strategic Development Plan (SDP) for the years 2025–2028, which aims to align local priorities with Fiji’s National Development Plan (NDP) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Chairman Ro Macanawai Mataitini emphasized that this updated plan was developed to better serve the needs of Rewa’s communities while contributing to broader national and global objectives.
During a recent council meeting, Mataitini confirmed that the 2023-2027 SDP had undergone significant revisions to enhance coherence with the NDP launched in 2022. The revised SDP also focuses on improving village-level planning frameworks to ensure that local voices are heard and integrated into the development strategy.
The Integrated Village Development Plan (IVDP) was officially launched at the meeting by Rural and Maritime Development Minister Sakiasi Ditoka, who highlighted the importance of tailoring development roadmaps for each of the 55 villages in Rewa. This initiative emphasizes community-driven approaches, engaging villagers in consultations to shape their individual village plans.
Mataitini noted that the council, alongside the iTaukei Affairs Ministry, will work closely with village leaders to create a development plan that reflects the villagers’ needs and aspirations, drawn from insights gained over the past few months.
This initiative reflects a broader trend across Fiji wherein local governance and infrastructure development are being prioritized to foster inclusive growth and resilience, especially in rural communities. It aims to uplift marginalized communities, enhance local governance, and promote collaboration among all stakeholders to tackle socio-economic challenges effectively.
There is hope that these strategic developments will pave the way for significant economic improvement and a strengthened sense of community ownership in shaping their futures.
