Rewa has secured the 2024 Digicel Fiji Premier League title after a commanding 4-1 victory against Nadi at Prince Charles Park yesterday. The Delta Tigers entered the match with 37 points, requiring only a draw to clinch the championship.
Rewa captain Setareki Hughes opened the scoring just before halftime, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes into the second half, winger Madhwan Gounder capitalized on a counter-attack to extend the lead to 2-0. Nadi struggled with poor passing and coordination, revealing issues with fitness that allowed Rewa to exploit their weaknesses.
Shortly after, Rewa’s Iosefo Verevou successfully converted a penalty following a foul inside the Nadi box. Substitute Delon Shankar then added a fourth goal for Rewa during a breakaway move, putting the Delta Tigers ahead 4-0. Nadi managed a consolation goal through a stunning free-kick from Tuiba Batiratu, but it did little to alleviate the disappointment for their fans.
After the match, Rewa coach Rodick Singh expressed pride in his team’s hard work throughout the season, acknowledging that they knew the league would be a tough battle. He noted the team’s consistency and the importance of qualifying directly for the OFC Champions League through the new format.
Nadi football president Mohammed Mohin Rafiq admitted the absence of key players impacted their performance against Rewa, highlighting the difficulty of facing such a strong opponent without an experienced squad. With one round of competition remaining, the Delta Tigers currently lead with 40 points.
