Rewa FC faced a challenging start to their 2025 OFC Men’s Champions League campaign, enduring a 4-2 defeat against AS Tiga Sport from New Caledonia in their opening match held in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Despite their initial promising attacking play, the team found themselves trailing after AS Tiga Sport took the lead in the 15th minute with a penalty kick converted by Mickaël Partodikromo, following a foul by Leone Kofana.
The situation worsened for Rewa in the 28th minute when Kavaia Rawaqa received a straight red card for an altercation with AS Tiga Sport’s Pierre Iewane. However, playing with ten men did not dampen Rewa’s spirit, as Epeli Valevou equalized shortly thereafter. Valevou executed a well-executed move, reacting swiftly to score off a rebound following a saved shot by John Orubulu.
Unfortunately for Rewa, AS Tiga Sport regained their lead just before halftime with a fantastic volley from Gérard Waia, ending the first half at 2-1. The second half saw AS Tiga Sport extend their lead with two additional goals from Gutacene Wadra and Jythrim Upa. Rewa managed another response when John Orubulu scored in the 72nd minute, stemming from a setup by Josepha Sela, yet could not progress further, concluding the match at 4-2.
Rewa’s performance demonstrated resilience and tenacity, characteristics that coach Rodeck Singh hopes to build on as they prepare for the upcoming matches in the tournament. Last year, the team had an impressive run but fell short in the semifinals, prompting an eagerness to improve.
Looking forward, this tournament presents Rewa FC with a significant opportunity to gain vital international experience and showcase their growth after facing strong opposition as they aim to push through the group stages and possibly reach the finals. The support from their fans remains strong, catalyzing hope for better results as they continue their campaign.
