The Rewa Provincial Council has enhanced its financial documentation systems by adopting a standardized framework for record-keeping, addressing longstanding issues with inadequate documentation. Roko Tui Rewa Kitione Raibevu announced this improvement during a recent meeting of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in Lomanikoro Village, emphasizing the importance of proper training for staff on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).
Mr. Raibevu highlighted the council’s transition to a new digital record-keeping system known as Sage, which has streamlined their documentation processes. He explained that previously, the manual and sometimes challenging logistics of transporting records to headquarters posed significant difficulties, particularly due to the geographic challenges of accessing the provincial office.
The council has made strides in ensuring compliance with global accounting standards through rigorous staff training, which includes capacity-building initiatives and supports the logistics of personnel attending workshops aimed at improving financial management. Raibevu noted that all financial staff, including both treasurers and himself, hold degrees, indicating a commitment to professional development within the council.
These advancements reflect ongoing efforts to improve accountability and governance in local councils, as evidenced by similar initiatives highlighted in recent discussions surrounding financial accountability and the administrative reforms within the iTaukei Affairs Ministry. This has contributed to an optimistic outlook regarding local governance, where public trust can be rebuilt through improved financial management and transparency.
Furthermore, the support from the government through infrastructure projects, such as the expected bridge construction to facilitate access, further exemplifies their commitment to enhancing provincial office operations and improving service delivery to the community.
The proactive measures being taken by the Rewa Provincial Council not only lay the foundation for improved financial accountability but also signal a hopeful path towards more effective management of public resources, ultimately benefitting local communities.
