The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) has unveiled the theme for Global Recycling Day 2025, scheduled for March 18 at Churchill Park in Lautoka. The theme, “Breaking Barriers: A Revolutionary Blueprint for the Waste Management Crisis,” seeks to address the urgent waste management challenges in Fiji.
Founder Amitesh Deo highlighted the significance of this theme in tackling the current waste crisis. He pointed out that collaboration with entities such as Tourism Fiji and the Lautoka City Council is vital for successfully implementing sustainable recycling practices.
In reflecting on recent gains, Deo noted a 20% uptick in recycling activities within Fiji, a milestone largely attributed to the PRF’s initiatives. However, he recognized that the overall recycling rate is still low, stressing the need for a more comprehensive and strategic approach to waste management.
Lautoka City Council CEO Mohammed Khan reiterated the importance of the “3Rs” – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – in enhancing waste management efforts. He emphasized that involving the community in adopting these practices could drastically reduce the volume of waste directed toward landfills.
The initiatives spearheaded by the PRF are pivotal for the region, as they aim for meaningful change. By acknowledging the role of informal recyclables collectors and fostering regional cooperation through the Pacific Recyclers Alliance, the foundation is establishing a robust framework for sustainable practices.
As Fiji forges ahead with these initiatives, there is a hopeful outlook for improved recycling efforts that could pave the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future. The PRF’s approach may also offer valuable insights for other regions grappling with similar waste management challenges, underscoring the power of collaboration in overcoming complex issues.
