The government plans to enhance waste management by conducting a feasibility study for the creation of a waste management authority, as announced by Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa. This proposed authority would act as a centralized entity aimed at improving the efficiency of waste collection, recycling, and disposal processes.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized that the authority would be crucial in promoting environmental sustainability, supporting local initiatives, and ensuring consistent waste management practices across the country. He highlighted the recently approved Western landfill project by the Cabinet as foundational to Fiji’s waste management capabilities.
The new environmentally sustainable landfill is intended to function as a central hub for waste management, incorporating advanced waste treatment technologies to minimize environmental impact and align with national goals related to recycling and pollution reduction.
To further enhance service delivery, the government is set to provide seven compactor trucks to four councils this year, with four of the trucks designated for the Nasinu Town Council.
