The government plans to enhance waste management by conducting a feasibility study for a new waste management authority, according to Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government. This authority aims to centralize waste collection, recycling, and disposal processes to improve efficiency.
Nalumisa emphasized that the authority would be crucial for promoting environmental sustainability, maintaining local balance, and ensuring consistent waste management practices across the country. He described the recently approved Western landfill project as a foundational element of Fiji’s waste management strategy.
The environmentally sustainable landfill is expected to act as a central hub for wastewater treatment, including advanced corporate waste treatment technologies, to reduce environmental impact while contributing to national goals in recycling and pollution reduction.
To enhance service delivery, the government will also provide seven compactor trucks to four councils this year, with four of the trucks allocated to the Nasinu Town Council.
