Revolutionizing Waste Management: A New Authority on the Horizon

The government is set to conduct a feasibility study aimed at establishing a waste management authority, as announced by the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. This proposed authority would serve as a centralized organization focused on improving the efficiency of waste collection, recycling, and disposal processes.

Minister Nalumisa emphasized that the authority is expected to play a crucial role in advancing environmental sustainability, maintaining local balance, and ensuring the implementation of consistent waste management practices across the country.

He highlighted the recent approval of the Western landfill project by the Cabinet, describing it as a foundational element of Fiji’s waste management strategy. This sustainable landfill is intended to function as a central hub for wastewater management, integrating corporate waste treatment technologies to lessen environmental impact and contribute to national objectives like recycling and pollution reduction.

To bolster service delivery, the government plans to provide seven compactor trucks to four local councils this year, with four of those trucks designated for the Nasinu Town Council.
