The Ministry of Education has announced the revival of interview processes for Year 13 students who are interested in pursuing careers in teaching. This initiative is part of a collaborative effort involving Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS). The goal is to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training across the nation.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro highlighted that a rigorous selection process is vital to attract both passionate and qualified candidates to the teaching profession. This initiative is rooted in the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which focuses on strengthening partnerships among stakeholders and enhancing the Ministry of Education’s services. The declaration aims to prepare graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to succeed within classrooms throughout Fiji.

Eligible students can apply for scholarships under the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, which support various Bachelor of Education programmes, including specialized fields such as Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for submitting online applications to TSLS is January 31, 2025, and successful candidates will be informed of their interview dates and venues through email and phone notifications.

The reintroduction of these interviews is a positive step toward enhancing the educational framework and ensuring that future teachers are well-equipped to handle the demands of the profession. By focusing on the quality of teacher candidates, Fiji is taking significant measures to improve its education system, fostering a brighter future for students and the nation as a whole.
