Revolutionizing Sugarcane: How One Man Transformed Fiji’s Farming Landscape

In the Solove Sector, Seqaqa, a notable success story is emerging, demonstrating the impact of determination and innovation within Fiji’s sugarcane farming community.

Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has transformed his own life and the livelihoods of numerous cane farmers by stepping in as a tractor service provider, addressing a vital need in the industry.

After leaving school in Form 4, Murti worked as a cane harvester before becoming the manager at Food Process, specifically at Batiri Citrus Farm. He discovered his true passion when he identified a significant opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, which was sparked by a new initiative from Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with the backing of Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti took a bold step to become a transport service provider. “I noticed there was a shortage of tractors in the sector, which made it challenging for farmers to prepare their land,” he shared. “Many growers couldn’t pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I was able to provide services without needing immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone.”

Beginning with just a single tractor, Murti applied his previous experience to assist local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to dependable service quickly gained the attention of farmers in the area.

Today, his business has seen considerable growth, now operating with a fleet of six tractors and a variety of essential tools, such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, which are crucial for sugarcane farming.

“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to expand the business,” he stated. “The work order system enabled me to operate it like a legitimate business, benefiting the farmers as well.”

In addition to his service-provider role, Murti has resumed his own cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year, with plans for further expansion.
