A new portable sugarcane harvester, specially designed for rugged hilly terrains, is poised to revolutionize harvesting methods for farmers operating at high elevations in Fiji. Imported from Japan by the Ministry of Sugar, this innovative machine aims to alleviate the difficulties faced by farmers in challenging agricultural landscapes.

Line Minister Charan Jeath Singh recently traveled to Japan to assess the harvester’s capabilities personally and has confirmed its imminent arrival in Fiji, sharing details via his official Facebook page. During discussions with local growers, Singh emphasized the significant challenges posed by steep farming conditions, noting that a large portion of the country’s sugarcane is sourced from these high-elevation farms.

“This harvester will maximize harvesting opportunities and ease the burden on farmers,” he stated, addressing the issues of labor shortages and transportation obstacles, which are often worsened by adverse weather conditions.

Equipped with specialized tracks for better movement across uneven terrain, the harvester aims to effectively tackle these pressing issues. Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, reiterated the necessity of mechanization for the sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry. “Investing in machinery is crucial to cope with the labor shortage,” he said, warning that without it, the industry would struggle to meet its demands.

Ratu Jone, who also works as a sugarcane farmer, shared his own experiences with machinery investment, emphasizing the importance of timely upgrades in farming equipment. Fellow farmer Mohammed Yunus echoed these concerns, highlighting the growing challenges of finding manual labor for harvesting.

With the introduction of this specialized harvester, farmers in the difficult terrains of Fiji can anticipate a more efficient and less labor-dependent approach to sugarcane harvesting. This advancement not only promises to enhance productivity but also sets a hopeful path toward a more sustainable and resilient sugarcane industry in the future.

This shift toward mechanization illustrates a proactive response to the challenges faced by farmers, showcasing the potential for improved working conditions and increased yields.
