A groundbreaking portable sugarcane harvester specifically designed for hilly terrains is poised to revolutionize the way farmers operate in Fiji’s high-elevation sugarcane fields. The machine, imported from Japan by the Ministry of Sugar, is expected to significantly alleviate the challenges faced by farmers working in these difficult environments.
Charan Jeath Singh, the Line Minister, recently traveled to Japan to observe the harvester in action. He shared images of this innovative piece of machinery on his official Facebook page and announced its forthcoming arrival in Fiji. During discussions with local growers, Mr. Singh emphasized the labor-intensive nature of harvesting sugarcane from steep farmland, revealing that a notable portion of the nation’s sugarcane is sourced from these challenging areas.
“This harvester will maximize harvesting opportunities and reduce the workload on farmers,” he stated, highlighting its potential impact. The consultations also addressed issues such as labor shortages and transportation difficulties, which have been exacerbated by adverse weather.
The new harvester features specialized tracks designed for improved mobility on uneven terrain, providing a solution to the challenges faced by farmers. Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, underscored the significance of mechanization in ensuring the sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry. “We must invest in machinery to combat the shortage of manual labor,” he remarked, noting that failure to do so could lead to overwhelming pressure on current laborers.
Ratu Jone, who is a sugarcane farmer himself, emphasized the necessity of timely machinery upgrades to keep the industry competitive and efficient. Fellow farmer Mohammed Yunus shared similar concerns, highlighting the growing challenge of finding manual labor for harvesting.
