“Revolutionizing Sugarcane Farming: The Proposal Set to Benefit Farmers”

Sugarcane farmers in the Wainikoro sector of Labasa have suggested to the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and the Ministry of Sugar that an open-access system for planting grants be implemented. This would enable farmers to apply for the grant at any time during the year.

During a recent visit by the Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, farmer Bal Sanju Reddy raised this issue. He highlighted that planting conditions differ greatly across various sectors, with some farms located on flat lands and others on hills and slopes.

“Some farms have ideal conditions for crop growth, while others face challenges and require more time,” Mr. Reddy stated. He argued that year-round access to grants would benefit more farmers, noting that currently, some miss out due to different planting hindrances and tight deadlines.

Senior FSC staff and Agriculture Services Manager (North), Bimlesh Lal, acknowledged the concerns and mentioned that the proposal has been forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for review. “We need to wait for their approval or recommendations, as they release funds based on a quota system,” Mr. Lal explained. The existing quota system distributes funds over a set period, requiring farmers to meet certain criteria and approvals to qualify for the grant.

FSC board member and farmer Akisi Vinaka pointed out that many farmers miss out on grants because they cannot meet the deadlines. She believes that open access to grants would greatly benefit hardworking farmers.

Minister Singh urged the FSC to support farmers in achieving better sugarcane yields and reassured that FSC staff are diligently assisting them. Mr. Reddy also emphasized the need for measures to prevent misuse of the planting grant, ensuring that deserving farmers receive the necessary support to improve sugarcane supply.
