The Ministry of Housing is taking significant steps to improve safety and reduce illegal activities in Public Rental Board (PRB) estates. Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa has acknowledged increased reports of crime and disorder in these communities and emphasized a collaborative approach with the PRB to enhance security measures.

Minister Nalumisa stated that the government is reviewing existing tenancy agreements to enforce compliance and considering innovative models like gated communities to regulate access to the compounds. He expressed the need for a structured system to manage the flow of people within the estates, highlighting concerns about unrestricted movement between buildings.

Among the proposed security enhancements are the installation of surveillance cameras and fencing, which have already proven effective in new PRB developments, like the estate in Raiwai, where access is now limited solely to tenants. The minister noted that while there are challenges regarding the functionality of security equipment, options are being explored to ensure residents feel safe and secure in their environments.

In addition to physical security measures, Nalumisa is advocating for civic education and awareness campaigns to foster community responsibility and pride. He believes that educating residents on legal standards and behavioral expectations is crucial to combating crime and promoting a peaceful living atmosphere.

These initiatives are in line with ongoing efforts by the PRB to bolster community safety, which have included previous measures to evict families involved in criminal activities and engage in outreach programs aiming to educate tenants about their rights and responsibilities. The PRB has taken a proactive stance in addressing these issues, recognizing the importance of building a supportive and secure environment for residents.

This comprehensive approach signals a positive shift towards creating safer neighborhoods, reflecting a commitment not only to enforce laws but also to empower residents through education and community building initiatives. As these measures progress, there is hope for a more harmonious living experience in PRB estates, indicating a brighter future for the families residing there.
