The upcoming 31st R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament is poised to revolutionize grassroots rugby in the country. This promising message was communicated by tournament director Solo Finau during the official launch held at the R.C. Manubhai Suva branch store.
Finau, a former senior administrator with the Fiji Rugby Union, emphasized the need for a strategic overhaul in how the game is played to benefit both players and coaches. He introduced innovative concepts designed to enhance the competitive experience within the sport. Notably, for the first time, the Nataleira Sevens will feature a bonus points system, a significant shift from traditional norms.
The first bonus point will be awarded when a player scores a try under the goal posts, which must then be successfully converted to receive the points. Additionally, teams can earn a second bonus point by achieving a converted try, a converted penalty, and a drop goal within a seven-minute timeframe during the match. This approach aims to broaden players and coaches’ understanding of scoring opportunities, highlighting that pivotal matches, including World Cups, have been decided by drop goals.
Finau is optimistic that this new tournament format will foster a competitive culture among players, ultimately benefiting the national sevens team as well. He envisions a scenario in which teams strive to score under the posts, prompting others to bolster their defenses and thus raising the overall standard of competition.
Atish Singh, regional manager of R.C. Manubhai, expressed the company’s enthusiasm in supporting the Nataleira Sevens, citing the tournament’s continuous growth and aspirations for it to become even larger and better in the subsequent editions.
The tournament is scheduled to take place at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori from December 19 to 21, promising an exciting showcase of rugby talent and innovation.
Overall, the Nataleira Sevens not only aims to elevate the level of rugby in the region but also encourages a spirit of dynamism and adaptability within the sport. The innovative changes being implemented are set to inspire budding athletes and pave the way for a thriving future in grassroots rugby.
