The 31st R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament is poised to revolutionize grassroots rugby in the nation. This insight was shared by tournament director Solo Finau during the official launch event held at the R.C. Manubhai Suva branch store.
Finau emphasized the need for strategic improvements in the way players approach the game. He noted that this tournament aims to develop a new concept that would benefit both players and coaches in multiple ways. “We need to come up with fresh ideas rather than adhering to traditional approaches in sevens rugby,” he stated.
A significant innovation introduced by Finau is the implementation of bonus points in this tournament, a first for sevens rugby in the country. He explained that players can earn a bonus point by scoring a try under the posts, which then must be converted. Additionally, a second bonus point can be awarded to a team that manages to score a converted try, a converted penalty, and a drop goal within a seven-minute timeframe.
The aim of these changes is to encourage players and coaches to think creatively about scoring opportunities. “Countries like South Africa, England, and Australia have won World Cups with drop goals,” Finau pointed out, highlighting the strategic depth this new format could introduce.
Finau is optimistic that the tournament will foster a competitive culture that will ultimately enhance the national sevens team. He explained that if all teams aim to score under the posts, their defenses will strengthen, thus elevating the overall competition level.
Moreover, he stated that the tournament aims to help teams adopt these new strategies in other competitions as well. Atish Singh, the regional manager of R.C. Manubhai, expressed gratitude for the association with the Nataleira Sevens and shared optimism for the tournament’s continued growth in the coming years.
Scheduled to take place at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori from December 19–21, the Nataleira Sevens promises to not only engage players and coaches but also enhance the spectator experience, making it an event to look forward to in the rugby calendar.
This tournament serves as a beacon of hope for the future of rugby in the region, demonstrating that innovation and a willingness to adapt can create exciting opportunities for player development and national success.
