The 31st R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament aims to significantly enhance grassroots rugby in the country, according to tournament director Solo Finau during the event’s official launch at the R.C. Manubhai Suva branch. Finau, a former senior official at the Fiji Rugby Union, emphasized the need for a strategic approach to improve player performance on the field.
He introduced an innovative tournament concept, incorporating new ideas that offer various benefits for players and coaches alike. A notable feature of this tournament will be the introduction of bonus points, marking a first for sevens rugby in the region. Finau explained that one method to earn a bonus point is by scoring a try directly under the posts, which must then be successfully converted. Another bonus point can be achieved by a team scoring a converted try, a converted penalty, and a drop goal within a seven-minute timeframe during a match.
The initiative aims to encourage players and coaches to explore different ways of scoring, reminiscent of historical World Cup victories that have hinged on drop goals by teams like South Africa, England, and Australia. Finau is optimistic that this new tournament format will foster a fresh culture among players aspiring to join the national sevens team in the future, enhancing competitive levels in the sport.
Finau further noted that if all teams aim to score closer to the posts, it would prompt improved defensive strategies, ultimately enriching the competitive spirit in each match. Additionally, the tournament will serve as a platform for teams to adopt and practice these new scoring formats in other competitions.
Atish Singh, the regional manager of R.C. Manubhai, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be involved with the Nataleira Sevens, highlighting the tournament’s growth and aspirations for even greater success in the coming years. Scheduled to take place from December 19 to 21 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, this tournament promises to be an exciting event for rugby enthusiasts.
This initiative reflects a hopeful evolution in grassroots rugby, showing a commitment to enhance the game’s standards and foster a stronger foundation for future talent. By embracing innovative scoring methods, the tournament not only excites fans but also inspires players to engage in new strategies, paving the way for a more competitive and dynamic rugby culture.
