Aminiasi Voresara, a senior education officer with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program, emphasized the necessity for drug rehabilitation centers in Fiji to incorporate skills-based training. This appeal was directed to acting permanent secretary of the Education Ministry, Ratu Meli Nacuva, during a recent congress organized by the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority (FHTRA) and the Ministry of Education at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi.

Voresara expressed concern over the increasing reliance on superficial “Band-Aid” solutions to address Fiji’s ongoing drug challenges. He proposed that rehabilitation centers be transformed into institutions that not only focus on recovery but also equip individuals with practical skills. “In the pursuit of rehabilitating our dropouts and students, they should learn something that prepares them for the future,” he stated, highlighting the importance of providing both support and educational opportunities rather than merely changing attitudes and habits.

Sakeo Ganivatu, Assistant Commissioner of Police for Internal Affairs, informed that discussions are already in progress with a non-governmental organization (NGO) to tackle this issue effectively. The NGO is collaborating with medical professionals and educators to enhance rehabilitation efforts.

Additionally, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad noted that funding to establish the Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau and support the drug rehabilitation center will be evaluated in the context of the national budget for 2024-2025.

This approach reflects a positive stride towards comprehensive rehabilitation strategies that not only address immediate drug-related issues but also foster a sustainable future for individuals affected by drug use. Implementing skills training in rehabilitation centers could enhance the lives of many individuals, empowering them to reintegrate into society successfully while combating the cycle of addiction.

Overall, the discussion emphasizes the need for a multifaceted approach to drug rehabilitation that goes beyond merely treating the symptoms, aiming instead for long-term change and skill development. This vision shows promise for reducing drug-related issues in Fiji and fostering a more skilled workforce in the process.
