A senior education officer has emphasized the necessity of integrating skills-based training into drug rehabilitation centers in Fiji. During a recent congress held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, Aminiasi Voresara addressed his proposal to Ratu Meli Nacuva, the acting permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education. He pointed out that current approaches to the country’s drug-related challenges often resemble temporary fixes rather than sustainable solutions.
Voresara suggested that transforming rehabilitation centers into skills training facilities could be beneficial, allowing individuals to gain valuable knowledge and competencies during their recovery. He expressed concern that without this enhancement, these centers risk becoming effective in changing attitudes and behaviors but ineffective in preparing participants for future opportunities.
Sakeo Ganivatu, Assistant Commissioner of Police for Internal Affairs, shared that discussions are ongoing with a local NGO, indicating collaborative efforts to address these rehabilitation strategies. Additionally, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad announced that funding for establishing the Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau and a dedicated drug rehabilitation center will be considered in the upcoming national budget for 2024-2025.
The integration of vocational training within rehabilitation programs presents a hopeful avenue for transforming the lives of those impacted by substance abuse. By equipping individuals with skills and knowledge, the initiative aims to not only support recovery but also to facilitate reintegration into society, thereby reducing the likelihood of relapse and promoting a more sustainable future.
This proactive approach may pave the way for a brighter, more empowering future for those seeking to overcome their challenges, ultimately contributing to healthier communities across Fiji.
