The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has confirmed that a replacement lift for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) is expected to arrive next month. This announcement comes amid ongoing concerns and social media inquiries regarding the non-functional lift at the facility.
In a recent statement, the ministry explained that the lift located in the West Wing of CWMH has been out of service for an extended period, significantly affecting patient care. The lift, which has been in operation for over 15 years, was initially acquired from the OTIS Elevator Company of New Zealand. Engineers from OTIS are currently on-site to assist in restoring its functionality, while the Ministry collaborates with related agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services.
Recognizing the necessity of addressing outdated infrastructure, the ministry noted that plans to replace the aging lifts at CWMH were initiated in 2023. With governmental funding now approved, the procurement process for new lifts is underway, with expected arrival in February 2025.
The newly planned lifts are specialized to accommodate patients, staff, and vital medical equipment, adhering to strict infection control standards. The ministry emphasized the importance of careful planning in both the procurement and installation processes.
Acknowledging the frustration and disruption caused by the lift’s failure, the ministry urged patience from patients, families, and staff as they work to enhance the hospital’s infrastructure and continue improving healthcare delivery across the nation.
Overall, this move to improve CWMH’s facilities reflects a commitment to bolstering patient care and modernizing health services, which is promising for the future of healthcare in the region.
