Parents in Fiji are grappling with challenges related to effective parenting, prompting experts to call for a more structured and supportive framework. Dr. Rajesh Maharaj, president of the Fiji College of General Practitioners (FCGP), recently highlighted the importance of an authoritative parenting style during an interview with The Fiji Times’ online news portal, The Lens@177.

Dr. Maharaj emphasized the need for clear guidelines and emotional support, expressing concern over misconceptions regarding corporal punishment among many Fijian parents. He stressed the necessity for increased education on parenting practices, stating, “I think we need to educate our parents more about parenting guidelines, and I am committed to this.”

In his endeavors to foster a nurturing environment for children, Dr. Maharaj aims to engage more with media to promote essential values such as honesty, respect, and compassion. He believes these values are crucial for enabling children to respect elders and positively contribute to their communities.

Practical advice for addressing common parenting issues, including tantrums and excessive screen time, was also provided by Dr. Maharaj. He suggested that children under two should avoid digital devices, in line with recommended guidelines. Additionally, he advised parents to identify underlying causes of tantrums, which often arise from frustration or a lack of attention.

Creating a nurturing home is vital, Dr. Maharaj noted, urging parents to seek professional guidance if children show unusual behaviors. He encourages engaging quiet or withdrawn children in activities to enhance family bonding and support.

These insights echo broader concerns raised by public figures like Sashi Kiran, Fiji’s Minister of Women, Children, and Social Protection, who has criticized extreme parenting methods. Recent studies indicate that approximately 72% of children in Fiji have faced some form of violence, underscoring the urgent need for effective, non-violent disciplinary methods.

The collaborative efforts of experts and advocates reflect a growing commitment towards healthier parenting practices and fostering nurturing environments for children in Fiji. This focus on education and community involvement presents a hopeful outlook for the future, where children can flourish in safe and supportive surroundings, encouraging more positive parenting approaches nationwide.
