The upcoming 31st R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament is poised to revolutionize grassroots rugby in Fiji. This announcement was made by tournament director Solo Finau during the official launch held at the R.C. Manubhai store in Suva.
Finau, a former senior administrator at Fiji Rugby Union, emphasized the need for strategic improvements to enhance players’ performance in sevens rugby. He aims to innovate the tournament structure to ensure players and coaches derive maximum benefit from it.
A key highlight of this year’s tournament is the introduction of bonus points, a first for sevens rugby. The bonuses will be awarded in two ways: a player must score a try under the posts and successfully convert it to earn the first bonus point. The second bonus point will be given to any team that scores a converted try, a converted penalty, and a drop goal within seven minutes of the match.
Finau hopes this innovative format will encourage players and coaches to think creatively about scoring points. He referenced past World Cup victories achieved through drop goals by countries such as South Africa, England, and Australia as examples of strategic scoring.
The tournament aims to foster a competitive spirit among teams, as the desire to score tries under the posts will compel others to strengthen their defenses, ultimately enhancing the overall level of competition.
R.C. Manubhai regional manager Atish Singh expressed gratitude for the company’s partnership with the Nataleira Sevens, highlighting the tournament’s consistent growth and the aspirations for even greater success next year.
The event is scheduled to take place at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori from December 19 to 21.
This exciting development not only promises to uplift grassroots rugby but could also serve as a stepping stone for nurturing future talent for the national sevens team, showcasing a commitment to progress and innovation in the sport. The potential for increased competition and unique scoring strategies makes this tournament an anticipated event in the rugby calendar.
