In Solove Sector, Seqaqa, a remarkable story of progress is emerging, showcasing the determination and creativity within Fiji’s sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly improved his life and the livelihoods of many cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider to address a critical need in the industry.

After leaving school after Form 4, Murti started his career as a cane harvester before moving on to manage Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). He discovered a significant opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, sparked by a new initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti made the courageous decision to establish a transportation service. He recognized that there was a shortage of tractors in the sector, which made land preparation challenging for farmers.

“Many growers couldn’t afford to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could offer services without needing immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone,” Murti stated.

Starting with just one tractor, he drew on his experience from Food Process to assist local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to reliable service quickly gained the attention of farmers in the area.

Today, his business has grown to include a fleet of six tractors and a variety of essential equipment such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, all crucial for sugarcane farming. “With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he said. “The work order system allowed me to run it like a proper business, benefiting the farmers as well.”

Additionally, Murti has resumed his own cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning further growth in the future.
