In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a success story is emerging that showcases determination and innovation within the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has made a significant impact on the lives of numerous cane farmers by stepping up as a tractor service provider, addressing a pressing need in the industry.
After leaving school in Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later became a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). He realized a substantial opportunity within Fiji’s sugarcane sector when a new initiative was launched by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti boldly became a transport service provider. “I noticed a shortage of tractors, which made it challenging for farmers to prepare their land,” he noted. Many growers struggled with upfront costs, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, he was able to offer services without requiring immediate cash payments, creating a beneficial arrangement for all parties.
Starting with just one tractor, Murti leveraged his experience at Food Process to assist local farmers with their land preparation needs. His commitment to providing dependable services quickly gained recognition among farmers in the region. Today, his business has grown considerably, featuring a fleet of six tractors along with essential implements like disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, which are crucial for sugarcane farming.
“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he remarked. “The work order system enabled me to operate it as a legitimate business, benefiting the farmers in the process.” Additionally, Murti has resumed cane farming himself, cultivating 7.5 acres of cane this year and planning for further expansion.
