In the Solove Sector of Fiji, Seqaqa, a remarkable story of success is emerging that showcases the resilience and innovation within the sugarcane farming community.
Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has transformed both his life and the livelihoods of numerous cane farmers as he stepped in as a tractor service provider, meeting a crucial need in the industry.
After leaving school after Form 4, he started his career as a cane harvester before becoming a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His pivotal moment arrived when he recognized a key opportunity within Fiji’s sugarcane sector, particularly one initiated by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with backing from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti made the courageous decision to become a transport service provider. “I noticed a lack of tractors in the sector, which made it challenging for farmers to prepare their land,” Mr. Murti stated. “Many growers were unable to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could provide services without needing immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone.”
Starting with just one tractor, Mr. Murti leveraged his prior experience to assist local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to delivering dependable services soon drew the attention of farmers across the area.
Today, his business has grown considerably, now featuring a fleet of six tractors and a variety of essential equipment, including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, all critical tools for sugarcane farming. “With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he noted. “The work order system allowed me to operate like a proper business, which ultimately benefited the farmers, too.”
Additionally, Mr. Murti has returned to cane farming himself, cultivating 7.5 acres of cane this year and planning for future expansion.
