Aminiasi Voresara, a senior education officer from TVET, has emphasized the need for skills-based training in drug rehabilitation centers in Fiji. This suggestion was made during discussions with the acting permanent secretary of the Education Ministry, Ratu Meli Nacuva, at the congress organized by the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority and the Ministry of Education held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi on Monday.
Voresara praised the current proposals regarding rehabilitation and advocated for additional supportystems, indicating that existing solutions to Fiji’s drug problem often fall short. He raised an important question about transforming rehabilitation centers into skills or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers, stressing that incorporating educational opportunities is crucial for those undergoing rehabilitation. By equipping individuals with practical skills, the centers can better prepare them for re-entering society and the workforce.
Assistant Commissioner of Police for Internal Affairs, Sakeo Ganivatu, noted that consultations are underway with a non-governmental organization on this matter, highlighting the collaborative effort to address drug rehabilitation issues.
Additionally, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has stated that funding for the establishment of the Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau and a drug rehabilitation center will be considered in the upcoming national budget for 2024-2025.
This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of holistic rehabilitation approaches, combining mental health support with practical skills training. By addressing the root challenges of drug addiction and enhancing future employability, these proposed changes could lead to more effective rehabilitation outcomes and hopeful reintegration into society.
In summary, the call for skills training in drug rehabilitation centers presents a promising shift towards a comprehensive approach to addressing addiction, offering individuals not just recovery but a pathway to a sustainable future.
