Fiji's Digital Future: Telecom's Bold Move Boosts Connectivity

Revolutionizing Connectivity: Telecom Fiji Unveils Fibre Optic Link for Vanua Levu

Telecom Fiji has successfully completed the Savusavu to Labasa Fibre Project, marking a pivotal enhancement in digital connectivity across Vanua Levu. This accomplishment signifies a major step forward in improving telecommunications infrastructure in the region, with the next phase now focused on distribution that will benefit both communities and local businesses.

The introduction of this fibre optic link promises to significantly enhance broadband speeds and reliability, moving away from the less efficient traditional microwave networks that are susceptible to disruptions. This project is a vital part of Telecom Fiji’s five-year fibre investment strategy, aimed at modernizing the nation’s telecommunications framework and ensuring scalable, secure, and sustainable connectivity for the future.

A notable achievement within the project is the provision of internet services to Saivou Village, previously cut off from digital connectivity. This initiative exemplifies Telecom Fiji’s commitment to narrowing the digital divide by reaching underserved regions. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted that the project aligns with the Government’s Look North policy, which is essential for advancing economic growth, education, and enhancing disaster resilience across Vanua Levu.

Telecom Fiji’s CEO, Goundar, noted that with the backbone of the infrastructure now established, efforts will now concentrate on enabling businesses, schools, and communities to fully benefit from the enhanced connectivity. He emphasized that reliable internet access has evolved from being a luxury to a necessity, critical for creating opportunities in today’s digital landscape.

Brent La Franchies, an executive from Kordia, expressed pride in contributing to this essential infrastructure, which promises long-lasting connectivity benefits for the northern communities of Fiji. The investment is expected to stimulate economic growth and improve access to education and healthcare services, fostering an inclusive digital economy in the region.

As this telecommunication infrastructure continues to progress, it ushers in prospects of a more connected and digitally empowered future for all Fijians. Expanded internet access stands to improve socio-economic conditions and resilience, offering a promising outlook for even the most remote areas of the nation. This initiative not only enhances connectivity but also nurtures the community’s aspirations for a better quality of life.
