Revolutionizing Care: Fiji’s Bold Move to Support Street Children and the Elderly

The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is building a rehabilitation center at the Suva Juvenile Centre, aimed at addressing the needs of street children. Minister Sashi Kiran highlighted this initiative as part of a wider strategy to tackle homelessness among vulnerable groups. The plan involves expanding the existing juvenile facilities to provide comprehensive care and support for these children.

In the meantime, the ministry is partnering with organizations such as the Salvation Army and Inspire Pacific to offer immediate care for children in need. Notably, there are already separate facilities established to support young girls, allowing them to focus on rehabilitation and personal growth.

The scope of the ministry’s work extends beyond children, as efforts are also underway to develop a rehabilitation program for elderly individuals living on the streets. Collaboration with housing organizations and the Ministry of Housing aims to create more spaces for the elderly, emphasizing a commitment to support all vulnerable demographics.

Minister Kiran also noted the unique challenges faced by youths with substance dependency issues. In response, the ministry is collaborating with UNICEF to establish a nationwide training program focused on drug and abuse rehabilitation.

Despite recognizing the hurdles and the time required for tangible results, Minister Kiran reassured the public of their commitment to these reformative actions. She called for patience as they continue to work through these initiatives, assuring that visible improvements will come in the upcoming months.

This development reflects a growing commitment to social welfare in Fiji, with increased focus on collaborative efforts among various ministries, local organizations, and community engagement. The ideals of compassion and rehabilitation echo throughout these initiatives, paving the way for a more hopeful future for the vulnerable youth and elderly populations.
