Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) has officially inaugurated its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) services in Nadi, marking a significant advancement in addressing chronic health issues such as wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The launch ceremony was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, who highlighted the pressing health crises related to non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, in Fiji.
Professor Prasad brought attention to the alarming statistic that one diabetes-related amputation occurs every 12 hours in Fiji, underscoring the urgent need for innovative healthcare solutions. He stated, “The introduction of HBOT is a pivotal move towards enhancing health outcomes and mitigating the necessity for amputations.” This new therapy is expected to dramatically reduce the incidence of amputations, thereby improving the quality of life for many Fijians.
The HBOT chamber will be operational 24/7, aiming to expedite recovery processes for patients. Additionally, this service is set to attract patients from neighboring Pacific Island nations, strengthening Fiji’s position as a regional leader in healthcare. Professor Prasad expressed optimism that this initiative would foster collaborations with other healthcare providers and contribute to a burgeoning medical tourism sector.
In conjunction with the HBOT introduction, the launch also included the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, offering healthcare service discounts to active cane growers, further showcasing the government’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility in rural communities.
As Fiji continues to modernize its healthcare infrastructure, with projects like a 100-bed super-specialty hospital supported by the Indian Government, this advancement in HBOT services reflects a broader vision to bolster healthcare systems and improve overall public health outcomes.
This launch not only brings immediate benefits to local patients suffering from chronic conditions but also demonstrates Fiji’s dedication to enhanced healthcare delivery for future generations. The introduction of HBOT represents a hopeful step towards addressing critical health issues, promising positive changes in the community’s health landscape and setting the stage for a healthier future.
