Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi has proudly launched its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) services, offering an innovative treatment option for chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The ceremonial opening was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, who emphasized the significance of this development amidst the alarming rates of diabetes in Fiji.

Professor Prasad highlighted a pressing health issue: one amputation occurs every 12 hours due to diabetes-related complications in the country. The introduction of HBOT is regarded as a critical step toward improving health outcomes and significantly reducing the need for amputations. “This marks a significant advancement in our healthcare system,” he stated, underlining the necessity for innovative solutions to improve health statistics in Fiji.

The newly operational Hyperbaric Chamber will be available 24/7, designed to accelerate recovery processes and enhance patient care. Beyond providing treatment for local patients, this service aims to attract individuals from neighboring Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a leading healthcare provider in the region.

In addition to the HBOT launch, Professor Prasad announced the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which offers healthcare discounts to active cane farmers, reflecting the government’s commitment to accessible healthcare, particularly for rural communities. This initiative is part of broader efforts to bolster Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure, including ongoing projects like a 100-bed super-specialty hospital funded by the Indian Government.

Overall, the launch of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy services at PSH represents a hopeful advancement for healthcare in Fiji, aiming not only to improve treatment options for existing health challenges but also to foster a collaborative healthcare environment that benefits the entire region. The emphasis on improving health outcomes and reducing the burden of chronic illnesses highlights a promising direction in Fiji’s approach to public health.
