The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has launched its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, a noteworthy development aimed at treating chronic ailments such as wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The inauguration event, officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Biman Prasad, marks a significant advance in tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly diabetes, which has emerged as the leading cause of premature deaths in Fiji.

During his remarks, Professor Prasad highlighted the alarming statistic of one diabetes-related amputation occurring every 12 hours in Fiji, stressing the critical need for innovative healthcare solutions. He affirmed that the introduction of HBOT represents a crucial step in improving health outcomes and significantly reducing the instances of amputations.

The new HBOT chamber is set to operate around the clock, designed to accelerate recovery times for patients. This therapeutic service is not only designed for the local population but aims to attract patients from other Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a premier regional healthcare provider. Professor Prasad expressed his hope that this initiative will foster collaborative opportunities with regional healthcare practitioners and enhance medical tourism.

Moreover, the event also introduced the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which offers healthcare discounts to active cane farmers in Fiji, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for rural communities.

Overall, the launch of HBOT at PSH signifies a positive trend in healthcare provision in Fiji, representing a proactive approach to combat chronic diseases and improve quality of life for its citizens. By investing in such advanced medical technologies, Fiji is not only addressing immediate health concerns but also laying down a foundation for a healthier future.

This initiative promises to reshape the healthcare landscape in Fiji, offering hope to many suffering from chronic conditions and setting a precedent for enhanced healthcare delivery in the region.
