A groundbreaking open-heart surgery at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospital (PSH) in Nadi has been hailed as a significant milestone for the facility. The patient, 61-year-old Kusum Lata from Natabua, underwent a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) procedure, performed successfully by a skilled team of Cardio Thoracic specialists without complications.

Grateful for the care she received, Lata expressed profound thanks to the management and staff of PSH for their efforts, particularly as she had initially been advised to organize a costly $50,000 trip to India for the surgery. After experiencing severe chest pains and a minor heart attack in June, a family member suggested exploring local healthcare options, leading her to inquire about the services at PSH.

To her relief, the procedure, which would have cost considerably more overseas, was scheduled locally at a fraction of that expense. “I am feeling so relieved, and all my pains have diminished after my operation,” she shared, eagerly looking forward to reuniting with her family and grandchild.

Parvish Kumar, founder and director of PSH, highlighted that establishing the new cardiology department and successfully conducting this surgery was the result of over 15 months of planning, significant investment in advanced technology, and collaboration among the PSH team. He noted the fortunate timing of Lata’s inquiry concerning their cardiology services.

Kumar expressed satisfaction not only for Lata and her family but also for the broader implications of this achievement. The cost for heart surgery abroad can reach up to $50,000, and Kumar emphasized how the services at PSH could position Fiji as a viable health tourism destination, offering high-quality healthcare at competitive prices.

In conclusion, the successful surgery marks a significant achievement not only for Kusum Lata but for the healthcare landscape in Fiji, paving the way for the nation to attract health tourists seeking affordable, high-quality medical services. This positive turn of events could enhance both local healthcare and the economy by promoting health tourism effectively.

This story serves as a hopeful reminder that quality healthcare can be accessible locally, providing not just relief for patients but also contributing to the overall advancement of the healthcare sector in the region.
