Fiji Airways is set to enhance inter-island air travel in Fiji by collaborating with American company Odys’ Aviation, known for its innovative technology in efficient air travel. The introduction of Odys’ Aviation’s hybrid VTOL aircraft, named ‘Laila’, is slated to begin early next year, making Fiji the first Pacific nation to implement this advanced aircraft.
According to Fiji Airways’ CEO Andre Viljoen, this initiative aligns with the airline’s “nine game changer strategy” aimed at transforming travel to Fiji’s maritime and outer islands. Viljoen highlighted the capabilities of the hybrid VTOL aircraft during his presentation at the recently concluded Fiji Tourism Convention 2024 in Denarau.
“This aircraft can perform vertical take-offs and landings, which is exciting for us, especially considering many islands in Fiji currently lack airport runways,” Viljoen explained.
The aircraft comes in two variants: a smaller cargo version that operates similarly to a drone, capable of carrying up to 100 kilograms with a range of 400 miles. This model is expected to facilitate cargo deliveries to remote islands in Fiji. The larger version is a nine-seater passenger aircraft, equipped with a captain and a first officer, which will also have the capability to take off and land in proximity to hotels due to its vertical take-off and landing features.
Viljoen expressed enthusiasm about being the launch partner with Odys’ Aviation, emphasizing the significant advantages this technology brings to Fiji’s air travel infrastructure.
