The Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, has called for a reformation of the Republic of Fiji’s Military Forces (RFMF) to restore public trust. During a recent event commemorating the RFMF’s reconciliation and restoration program, he emphasized the importance of leadership and integrity among senior officers.
Ratu Viliame highlighted a persistent sense of uncertainty since 1987, which has diminished public confidence in the RFMF. He expressed concern that misguided directives and a failure to honor the sacrifices of ancestors have contributed to this loss of faith. “Wrong judgement and poor leadership have led to the pain and hurt that we see today,” he remarked.
With a strong desire for positive change, he urged the RFMF to move away from its historical involvement in coups and other divisive actions. “As of today, we hope to leave everything in the past behind,” he said, appealing to military leaders to educate and inspire the next generation. Ratu Viliame’s vision includes leadership that is wise and influenced by a higher moral standard, emphasizing the need for the RFMF to rebuild trust with the public.
He concluded with a hopeful message, asserting that it is time for the RFMF to start anew and strive for a future that honors the values of their heritage.
This call for reform not only reflects a desire for change within the military but also underscores the broader need for unity and trust within the communities they serve. Embracing these values may pave the way for a more stable and secure future for Fiji, driven by a commitment to service and integrity.
