Epeli Draunidalo Laliqavoka, a 75-year-old man from Tarukua village in Cicia, Lau, has shared insights about the traditional practices and significance of coconut palms in his community. He reminisced about the past, recalling how he learned from his father about the various uses of coconuts and the importance of preserving cultural practices.
According to Epeli, his community utilizes coconuts not only for local consumption but also for trading with neighboring islands, such as Lakeba and Tui Nayau. He explained that there are two primary products made from coconuts: copra, which is the dried meat used for oil extraction, and a traditional beverage known as “magimagi.”
Epeli highlighted the meticulous process involved in preparing magimagi, which includes selecting high-quality coconuts and ensuring the correct timing during its preparation. The final product is noted for its rich flavor and is often shared within the community and beyond.
He has been involved in the magimagi business for over 30 years, officially starting in 2007 after leaving his public service job. His expertise has garnered attention on social media, particularly Facebook, leading to an increase in demand for his products, which are shipped to countries like Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and other Pacific nations.
The current price for magimagi is around $2 per meter, pricing varying based on the order size. Epeli stated that he has experienced a surge in orders, noting that the demand helps him sustain his business successfully.
Epeli emphasized the importance of hard work and perseverance in traditional practices. He believes that by preserving their cultural heritage and actively participating in agricultural practices, the community can improve their livelihoods and provide essential support for future generations.
He also remarked on the significance of cultural heritage and the responsibilities of the youth to uphold and foster these traditions, reinforcing the community’s strength amid changing times.
