The Ministry of Women in Fiji has expressed concerns about the decline in traditional craftsmanship skills that are vital for the creation of cultural artifacts. Permanent Secretary Eseta Nadakuitavuki emphasized the importance of preserving these skills to safeguard Fiji’s rich cultural heritage and maintain the production of authentic traditional goods.

To combat this decline, the Ministry intends to identify artisans from rural areas with traditional craftsmanship talents and connect them with facilitators who can help pass on their knowledge to younger generations. Nadakuitavuki stated, “We are witnessing the loss of many traditional skills. However, we are grateful for our women, who are showing an interest in learning about these crafts and maintaining the connection with their cultural roots.”

In addition to these initiatives, the Ministry plans to launch training programs next year aimed at empowering youth, with a focus on both women and men mastering traditional craftsmanship techniques. This aims to deeply root these crafts within Fijian culture, ensuring they flourish for future generations.

The significance of these skills as a representation of Fiji’s identity was underscored by the Permanent Secretary, who noted their crucial role in the nation’s cultural landscape. To strengthen these efforts, the Ministry is working with the Fiji Arts Council to facilitate training sessions and provide a platform for artisans to display their craftsmanship and share their knowledge.

Recent trends, such as the National Crafts Exhibition, highlight a growing inclusivity within the crafting community, with an increasing number of men participating in traditionally female-dominated crafts. This event encourages local artisans to showcase their talents, thereby fostering opportunities for economic sustainability alongside cultural preservation.

These initiatives and collaborations reflect a hopeful trajectory for the future of traditional skills in Fiji. By investing in education and training, there is significant potential for revitalizing these crafts, ensuring that Fiji’s unique heritage remains lively and influential within the community and beyond.
