The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) in Fiji is partnering with Fiji National University (FNU) to launch a new Diploma in Vanua Leadership program, aimed at integrating traditional leadership values with modern skills. This initiative is a response to the increasing need for competent leaders capable of tackling contemporary societal challenges while respecting cultural heritage.
During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula praised FNU for this significant development, which he believes will contribute positively to Fiji’s future. Participants enrolled in the Diploma program will gain essential skills in governance, conflict resolution, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.
Ratu Viliame stressed the importance of a disciplined approach in leadership, advocating for a strict schedule that includes early rising and self-discipline. “A leader must first lead themselves before leading others,” he stated, emphasizing the foundational principle of self-governance in effective leadership.
Professor Nii-K Plange, FNU’s acting Vice Chancellor, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the university’s commitment to nurturing capable leaders who possess a strong foundation in both traditional knowledge and modern practices. This program represents a collective effort to revive and empower Fiji’s indigenous leadership structures.
Previous related initiatives have already shown promising results, with a significant increase in the recognition of chiefly titles—up from 51% to approximately 85% filled since February 2024. This is part of a broader movement to recognize and fortify traditional leadership roles in the face of modern societal complexities.
By investing in the future of traditional leadership through education and skills development, Fiji is not only honoring its cultural legacy but also fostering a sustainable framework for governance that can effectively engage with the challenges of the 21st century. As these leaders are prepared with modern training, they are better equipped to inspire and guide their communities towards a vibrant and self-reliant future.
