TUI Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has delivered a pressing call for Fijians to return to traditional values and unity amidst a backdrop of burgeoning social issues, including drug abuse and the erosion of cultural identity. He emphasized the risks of losing one’s identity if these foundational values are not revitalized.

In his statement, Ratu Wiliame highlighted alarming signs of family breakdown and the pervasive nature of drug abuse in contemporary society. He noted that during his tenure, the increase in drug-related activities, including alarming practices like bluetoothing — using blood transfusion methods as a means to get high — points to a severe deterioration in community values and morals. While this disturbing trend is most prevalent in Viti Levu, he warns that it is starting to extend into the Northern parts of Fiji.

Echoing previous sentiments expressed by Ratu Viliame Seruvakula and iTAUKEI Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu, Ratu Wiliame pinpointed the diminishing influence of cultural traditions and family cohesiveness as crucial factors contributing to these societal challenges. All three leaders stress that as drug abuse escalates, particularly among youth, the need for a strong familial foundation becomes ever more critical to promote guidance and support.

To counteract these trends, Ratu Wiliame advocates for a collective community effort to foster strong family structures that uphold traditional values. His message aligns with Minister Vasu’s emphasis on reinforcing family dynamics to combat underlying social issues such as teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, and violence.

This concerted advocacy from traditional leaders represents a hopeful initiative—if Fijians rally to restore their cultural foundations and strengthen familial ties, they can combat the rising tide of social problems. A united community can potentially pave the way for a healthier, more resilient future, emphasizing the importance of traditional values in navigating contemporary challenges.
