Reviving Trade: Fiji and PNG Forge New Economic Pathways

Bill Olmi, the acting high commissioner of Papua New Guinea to Fiji, has voiced concerns about the trade relationship between the two countries, specifically highlighting the noticeable imbalance due to the limited availability of PNG products in Fijian supermarkets. This statement was made at the recent revival of the Fiji & PNG Business Council event held in Suva, where Olmi underscored the necessity for enhancing trade collaboration.

He pointed out that the reestablishment of the Fiji-PNG Business Council is a crucial step towards strengthening economic partnerships not only between Fiji and PNG but also across other Pacific Island nations. This platform is poised to foster dialogue and cooperation, enabling business communities from both nations to collaborate, exchange ideas, and tackle shared economic challenges.

Furthermore, Investment Fiji announced intentions to lead a business delegation to Papua New Guinea to explore investment and trade opportunities. The specifics about this delegation’s schedule have yet to be confirmed. During the council’s Annual General Meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, expressed that this revival brings significant potential, particularly in sectors such as tourism where both nations could reap considerable benefits.

Kamikamica expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing that improved trade relations could unlock abundant opportunities for both countries, reinforcing the importance of mutual cooperation to cultivate shared benefits.

The revival of the Fiji-PNG Business Council represents a hopeful advancement in regional economic collaboration, potentially leading to new investments and stronger trade relationships. In a global climate where nations are eager to forge closer ties, the renewed commitment between Fiji and PNG stands to inspire closer cooperation beyond just economic interests, paving the way for advancements in various essential sectors.
