Reviving the Punch: New Boxing Gym Set for Labasa

Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa, aimed at rejuvenating amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This announcement was made by Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday after his attendance at the South Pacific Boxing Promotion event at Subrail Park.

Following a nine-year hiatus, professional boxing is making a return to Labasa. Ligairi emphasized that the Labasa Town Council aims to revitalize the sport through this initiative, with a proposed location for the gym identified near the botanical garden at Lions Park.

Construction efforts are expected to begin soon, with potential financial backing from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji. The facility will include a boxing ring for training and a fully equipped gym.

Ligairi pointed out that the existing Nasekula Gym’s limited space prompted the need for a larger facility to accommodate a greater number of sports enthusiasts. Collaborative discussions between the Labasa Town Council and the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) have been initiated to advance the development of this gym in the town.

The MRU previously assisted in establishing the gym at Nasekula with equipment donated by the Silktails Rugby League Club, and the Labasa Town Council is also seeking support from other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

Ligairi believes the proposed gym will enhance the financial standing of the Labasa Town Council and inspire more individuals to engage in the sport, helping them to realize their potential. He noted that hosting significant sporting events, such as the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament, Fiji Secondary Schools rugby competition (Vodafone Deans Trophy), and boxing promotions, has revitalized the community in Vanua Levu.

“This initiative takes a holistic approach, benefiting not only the council but also the local economy, including hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants,” Ligairi added.
