A Tamil language instruction program funded by the Indian government has officially commenced at Penang Sangam School in Rakiraki, marking an important cultural revival for the Fiji Indian community. This initiative, established in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam, aims to bring the rich Tamil heritage back to life among Fiji’s residents.
Indian High Commissioner Palaniswamy Karthigeyan announced that two Tamil teachers from India will be stationed at both Penang Sangam and Sangam Primary School in Labasa to offer Tamil classes for students and interested members of the community. He highlighted that the revival of Tamil, one of the oldest classical languages, has long been a desire of the Fiji Indian community, particularly for those whose ancestors, known as Girmitiya, emigrated from present-day Tamil Nadu in the early 20th century.
Following External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s visit to Fiji in February 2023 for the 12th World Hindi Conference, and his discussions with representatives of the Indian diaspora, the Indian government approved the dispatch of Tamil teachers to Fiji, fulfilling a longstanding aspiration to reintroduce the language which had nearly faded away over the past 80 years.
Mr. Karthigeyan emphasized the crucial role language plays in preserving culture and enhancing understanding among different communities. He encouraged the citizens of Fiji to seize this opportunity to learn Tamil, promoting both cultural identity and unity.
Expressing gratitude toward the Fijian Government and the Sangam leadership for their support in launching this initiative, Mr. Karthigeyan conveyed optimism that it would further strengthen the lasting relationship between India and Fiji, promoting cultural exchange and friendship.
