The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, is participating in the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar taking place in London from November 26 to 29, 2024.
This year’s seminar centers around the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy,” reflecting a growing global emphasis on sustainability within the sugar sector.
Minister Singh has taken the opportunity during the seminar to engage with several international companies, aiming to enhance the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) relationships worldwide. Notably, one significant meeting was held with representatives from Tate and Lyle, a part of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. The focus of their discussions was on sustainability in global markets, which is increasingly becoming essential for success in international trade.
The historical context of these conversations is also noteworthy, as Tate & Lyle was once the largest importer of Fijian sugar during the era of preferential pricing agreements with the European Union (EU). This relationship is being revived with an emphasis on adapting to current market demands, which is a positive development for Fiji’s sugar industry.
In summary, Minister Singh’s engagements at the ISO Seminar illustrate a proactive approach to revitalizing important international relationships and advancing sustainable practices within Fiji’s sugar industry. This commitment not only reflects the industry’s adaptability but also promises potential economic benefits for the region moving forward.
