Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, is currently participating in the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London, which runs from November 26 to November 29, 2024. The focus of this year’s seminar is “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy.”
During the seminar, Minister Singh engaged with several international companies to enhance the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) relationships within the global sugar market. Notably, he met with executives from Tate & Lyle, a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refinery Group. The discussions centered on strategies for achieving sustainability in global markets, a vital consideration in today’s trade environment.
These discussions also held historical significance, as Tate & Lyle was once Fiji’s largest importer of sugar during the era of preferential pricing agreements with the European Union.
This renewed engagement with international stakeholders like Tate & Lyle offers hope for the future of Fiji’s sugar industry, potentially leading to strengthened ties and improved sustainability practices that could benefit farmers and the economy.
The continued dialogue highlights a proactive approach to revitalizing relationships that support the growth and competitiveness of Fiji’s sugar sector in a global context.
