The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, is representing Fiji at the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London, taking place from November 26 to 29, 2024. This year’s seminar is focused on the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy.”

On the sidelines of the seminar, Minister Singh engaged in discussions with several international companies to enhance Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) global market positioning. Notably, he met with representatives from Tate and Lyle, a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. The purpose of their discussions was to address the importance of sustainability in the global sugar market, which is becoming increasingly essential in international trade.

Their meeting also carried significant historical context, as Tate & Lyle was once the largest importer of Fijian sugar during the peak of preferential pricing agreements with the European Union (EU). Reviving this relationship could be beneficial for the Fijian sugar industry, potentially ushering in new opportunities for growth and collaboration.

By focusing on sustainable practices, Fiji’s sugar industry could align itself with global market trends, enhancing competitive advantage while addressing environmental concerns. This initiative not only supports local producers but also contributes to long-term sustainability efforts in the industry.

In summary, Minister Singh’s participation in the ISO meeting highlights Fiji’s proactive approach to reinvigorating its sugar industry through international partnerships, emphasizing sustainability as a key factor for future success. This strategy points to a hopeful future where the industry can thrive both locally and globally.
