Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, is participating in the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London from November 26 to 29, 2024. This year’s seminar centers on the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy,” highlighting the industry’s shift towards more environmentally-friendly practices.
During the seminar, Minister Singh engaged with several international firms to bolster the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) global market connections. Notably, he held discussions with executives from Tate and Lyle, a key player in the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. The talks emphasized the importance of sustainability in the global sugar market, a growing requirement for international trade.
The conversations held historical significance, as Tate & Lyle was once Fiji’s largest sugar importer during a time when the country benefited from preferential pricing agreements with the European Union. This rekindling of ties could indicate a promising revival for Fiji’s sugar industry, fostering stronger international partnerships.
In summary, Minister Singh’s attendance at the ISO Seminar represents an important step towards enhancing Fiji’s sugar industry’s sustainability and global relevance, potentially reigniting beneficial international relationships that could lead to positive outcomes for the sector. The emphasis on sustainability marks a hopeful direction for the future of sugar production and trade.
