Reviving Suva Harbour: Major Ship Removal Project Underway!

South Sea Towage Limited (SSTL) has commenced preparatory activities after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Pacific Marine Group to address the issue of abandoned ships that mar the appearance of Suva Harbour.

Unit Trust of Fiji, which owns a 60 percent stake in SSTL, is emphasizing the urgency to initiate this project by January 2025. General Manager Sakiusa Bolaira noted that approximately 80 derelict vessels need to be removed from the harbour as part of a necessary rehabilitation process. He shared troubling footage depicting the situation on-site and highlighted the impact on larger ships’ ability to dock safely in Suva Harbour due to these hazards.

SSTL is collaborating with Fiji Ports Corporation and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji to facilitate the removal of these vessels. SSTL Chairperson Himmat Lodhia stated that today’s signing demonstrates a mutual commitment to clearing Suva Harbour of abandoned ships and debris, a concern that extends beyond Suva to other locations in Fiji.

Lodhia pointed out that discussions regarding the removal of these vessels have been ongoing among the leadership, and now, with the partnership with Pacific Marine Group, they are prepared to take action. He also announced plans to expand operations into the Solomon Islands in November, with existing services already in place in Vanuatu and Nauru.

Morris, from Pacific Marine Group, described the company as a leader in the Marine Contracting and Commercial Diving sectors, offering a comprehensive range of services, including marine construction, dredging, and salvage operations. He assured that all projects are executed according to accredited systems and legislation, reflecting professionalism and pride.

Additionally, it was noted that SSTL has a reviewable term contract with Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd, granting it exclusive rights to manage all related movements and services at designated ports, including Suva and Lautoka.
