Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, is currently participating in the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar taking place in London from November 26th to 29th, 2024. This year’s seminar is centered around the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy,” highlighting the increasing importance of sustainability in global markets.

During the seminar, Minister Singh engaged with several international companies to enhance Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) presence in the global marketplace. One notable interaction was with Tate and Lyle, a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. The discussions focused on the potential for sustainability in global markets, a theme that is becoming essential for business considerations worldwide.

The historical significance of these talks is noteworthy, as Tate & Lyle was once Fiji’s largest sugar importer during the era of favorable pricing agreements with the European Union. This meeting is seen as a pivotal step towards revitalizing the relationship and exploring future opportunities for collaboration within the sugar industry.

This initiative not only highlights the efforts of the Fijian government to strengthen international partnerships but also reflects a proactive approach to adapt to global market trends that prioritize sustainable practices. The engagement with established companies like Tate & Lyle signifies a hopeful move towards a rejuvenated and more resilient sugar industry in Fiji, potentially paving the way for new growth opportunities.
