Reviving Rugby Glory: Votualevu Rugby Team Makes a Comeback

After three decades without a rugby team, Votualevu is seeing a revival as efforts to rejuvenate the club have come to fruition. This housing subdivision near the Nadi International Airport has a rich history of producing star players for Fiji’s national rugby sevens and fifteens teams.

In its prime, the Votualevu club was home to legends like flanker Iokimi ‘Iron Man’ Finau, who captained both Nadi and the Flying Fijians in the 1980s. The Rabaka brothers—Samisoni, Tomasi, and Saula—also made notable contributions, playing for the Cavaliers under the late Don Collingwood’s leadership. Samisoni and Tomasi further represented the Flying Fijians, while Benji Navunisalevu made his mark as a top sevens winger.

In addition to rugby, the club boasted top footballers such as former Nadi and national striker Usaia Visawaqa and Akariva Ramusu.

Club president Waqa Vulawalu noted that the Votualevu Housing area has faced challenges, but reviving the rugby team is a step towards changing the area’s perception. “The power of rugby can open doors for many young men here, providing opportunities with overseas clubs and a better future for their families,” Vulawalu said.

With around 120 youths in the area, many of whom are school dropouts and unemployed, the initiative aims to bring them together for the community’s betterment. Vulawalu mentioned the potential benefits of being close to the Drua franchise, hoping it can help combat poverty.

The revival has united the community and various denominations under a shared vision and mission. The team’s manager is Vikatoria Rabaka, and the team chaplain is Seremaia ‘Tablee’ Visawaqa. Training has already commenced for upcoming rugby sevens tournaments, with plans to establish a team in the Nadi Rugby Union in the near future.
