The iTaukei community is grappling with an identity crisis that threatens their cultural integrity, according to Opposition MP Semi Koroilavesau in his recent parliamentary speech. He expressed concerns about the growing disconnect that iTaukei people, particularly the youth living in urban areas, are experiencing from their ancestral ties and traditional structures. This crisis, Koroilavesau elaborated, is a combination of economic challenges, modernization, and the repercussions of colonial-era legal reforms, leading to a loss of knowledge about traditional kinship groups known as Mataqali.

Koroilavesau emphasized that the consequences of this disconnection extend beyond economic issues, penetrating into the very essence of their identity. Yet, he urged the community to reclaim their cultural mapping and reinstate efforts to teach and celebrate their traditions, roles, and stories, which are crucial for rebuilding community cohesion.

This call for cultural renewal reflects sentiments expressed by other community leaders, such as Tui Bua Ratu Makutu Nagagavoka, who warned of the risks that modernization poses to iTaukei customs. Leaders have highlighted the need for intergenerational engagement to pass down traditional knowledge and cultural practices. Celebratory events such as vakasenuqanuqa have been pivotal in fostering unity and reminding the younger generation of their responsibilities toward maintaining their heritage.

The discussions among iTaukei leaders emphasize a collective responsibility to nurture cultural education, particularly in schools, to create a sense of pride and ownership regarding their identity. Initiatives that integrate traditional knowledge with modern educational practices are seen as best practices that not only fortify community bonds but also enhance resilience against contemporary challenges.

As the iTaukei navigate the complexities of preserving their cultural identity amid modernization, there remains a hopeful outlook. By reaffirming their commitment to cultural education and engagement, there is potential for a revitalization of their rich traditions, ensuring that the legacy of the iTaukei people endures for future generations.
